Notes:
The red target “[l42484]” label ran from 1967-1969.
The [l175227] was sold to [l56767] at the end of 1968 and pressing was outsourced to the two MCA plants: [l315076] and [l314985]. The “2” in the runouts would indicate this version was pressed at the [l315076].
This version was released sometime between 1969 and 1975 when the [l175227] ceased to operate.
These target labels differ from stock “target” labels with different rim text that is in the outer red ring noting licensing from [l87317].
This [l175227] release has two less tracks than the original and earlier pressings. The two tracks removed are “Billy Goat Hill” and “Everglades” and appear to have been removed from all post-1966 releases.
[l175227] can be identified by the “8” in the catalog number and by three “///” on the top left of the cover. The “16” on the bottom right of the rear cover may indicate manufacturing involvement by [l56767].
Writing credits for A1 are incorrect: The song was originally written by North Carolina poet Thomas Land and then later “arranged” and popularized (locally) by Appalachian banjoist Frank Proffitt (1913–1965). Frank Warner (1903–1978) later sang a version that the Kingston Trio version is based on. John and Alan Lomax simply collected folk music. Only Proffitt was ever awarded royalties for the Kingston trio version, though he died in 1965 as noted above.
