Notes:
℗ 1998 Original sound recording made and owned by Conifer Records Limited.
Artwork, sleevenotes and label copy © 1998 Conifer Records Ltd., a division of BMG Entertainment International UK and Ireland Limited.
Recorded for Conifer Classics on 26-28 February 1997 in the Joseph-Keilberth-Saal, Bamberg.
Total playing time: 58:57
Release Date:
No earlier than 2005. Outer traycard and CD label side give ℗ and © dates of 1998. These are supported by outer traycard logos, with [l417896] logo, i.e. BMG’s red triangle trademark with “CONIFER” beneath underscore, reflecting [l357217]’s earlier acquisition by [l274563] in 1995. On the right, just above barcode, a white text box contains the words “Reproduction authorized by [l312845]”, which was not formed until Sony Classical and BMG Classics merged in 2005.
Evidently a CDr, since (a) playing side is completely blank, with no codes, numbers or marks; (b) label covers disk all the way to spindle hole; and (c) disk reports to system_profiler SPDiscBurningDataType in Mac Terminal as CD-ROM, which is the norm for an already burned CD-R (only blank CD-Rs report as CD-Rs).
Colour photo of conductor on traycard.
Logos of Bamberger Symphoniker and Bayerischer Rundfunk at top right corner of outer traycard.
EDR (Extended Dynamic Range) acronym at bottom right corner of outer traycard. EDR recording technology described at length on back of booklet.
Front cover painting: “Im Wald der Gräfin Mordwinowa, Peterhof” by Iwan Iwanowitsch Schischkin. Tretjakov Gallery, Moscow. © AKG London.
28-page booklet includes liner notes (© Martin Anderson 1998) and artist biographies in English, French and German. The translation on pp.6-7 of “The Song of the Fish”, from Lermontov’s poem “Mtsyri” – Мцыри, i.e. “The Novice” – is taken from Mikhail Lermontov, Major Poetical Works (Croom Helm, Beckenham 1983), with acknowledgements to Ben Chatterley of The School of Slavonic and East European Studies, London University, “for his help in locating this source”.
Erratum: The Lermontov translations in the book cited are misattributed to an “Anatoly Libernian”, in fact the scholar and translator Anatoly Liberman.
